This subject builds on the skills acquired in Ensemble Studies 1 and 2, with increased scope for solo improvisation in an ensemble context. Ensemble studies are led by experienced practitioners in the field of contemporary music performance and delivered in practical sessions.

Throughout the subject students will be required to engage in rehearsals, repertoire development, performances and focused group discussions, covering aspects such as interpretation, arrangement, originality, creativity, balance, interaction, dynamics, tempo, placement, style, rhythm and harmony.

Intended learning outcomes

On completion of this subject, students should be able to:

  • apply intermediate composition, arrangement and improvisation skills to a wide spectrum of music;
  • apply performance and associated music skills to jazz repertoire;
  • work in a wide variety of musical styles, both individually and as a team member;
  • show a developing performance awareness;
  • demonstrate an emerging individual style in performance;
  • engage in constructive critical debate.

Generic skills

On completion of this subject students should be able to:

  • have in-depth knowledge of their specialist discipline;
  • have reached a high level of achievement in creative artistic practice, problem solving and communication;
  • be critical and creative thinkers, with an aptitude for continued self-directed learning;
  • have the capacity to participate fully in collaborative learning and to confront unfamiliar problems.
