This subject introduces students to the practical administration of a symphony orchestra. Through interactive seminars, students receive a "behind-the-scenes" perspective on key areas of orchestra administration and operations: artistic planning and library administration; management and finance; marketing and sales; education and community engagement.
Intended learning outcomes
On completion of this subject, students should be able to:
- identify common artistic aims of professional orchestras;
- identify and discuss solutions to common workplace issues in a large arts organisation;
- develop and critique strategy related to artistic development, outreach, human resources, and philanthropy in a professional orchestra;
- articulate the social significance and educational mission of contemporary orchestras.
Generic skills
On completion of this subject, students should be able to:
- communicate effectively in oral and written language;
- demonstrate appropriate leadership in group settings;
- manage competing demands on time, including self-directed project work;
- integrate personal reflection into the creative process.
