In this subject, students undertake an independent research project in a hearing-related field of science or biomedicine under the close supervision of an academic mentor(s). The project is directed at developing the student's ability to design and undertake a substantial body of work, to critically analyse and interpret research findings, and to report on the outcomes in written and verbal form using the appropriate scientific style.
Intended learning outcomes
Knowledge
On completion of the subject, students will demonstrate advanced knowledge of:
- The key-research findings within the sub-discipline of otolaryngology relevant to individual research project.
- The relationship between research design and ethical research practices.
Skills
On completion of the subject, students will demonstrate advanced skills in:
- Critically analysing existing literature to inform the generation of a productive research question.
- Executing a research plan within a research group effectively to obtain data.
- Constructing a research plan (e.g. research design, methods of observation) to address a research question.
- Analysing data to address a research question appropriately.
- Reporting on analyses of data to answer a research question.
Application of knowledge and skills
On completion of the subject, students will be able to apply their knowledge and skills to:
- Collaborate with an academic mentor-supervisor on a research project.
- Communicate and interpret their research results effectively in written and oral formats.
Generic skills
Students will learn to:
• Design and manage a research project
• Critically appraise scientific literature
• Analyse and interpret scientific findings, and place outcomes in the context of the existing literature
• Communicate scientific ideas effectively in both written format and through oral presentation
• Evaluate and synthesize information in a flexible manner
• Conduct research in a scientific laboratory, following standard protocols, operating procedures and safe work practices
