This subject will comprise theoretical knowledge and discussion of current advances in physiotherapy in the areas of paediatric cardiorespiratory, neurological and orthopaedic physiotherapy. Study of bioscience pertaining to these areas will form the basis for the management of common paediatric conditions. This subject involves a two-week intensive theory block. Students will complete a class presentation and submit two written assessment tasks during the subject. 

Intended learning outcomes

On completion of this subject, students are expected to be able to:

  • Apply knowledge and skills of advanced clinical physiotherapy practice integrated with new information about the assessment and management of paediatric conditions, family-centred practice and current theories of movement development
  • Develop effective written and oral communication skills to convey knowledge gained about evidence-based paediatric physiotherapy practice
  • Apply an advanced understanding of the international context and sensitivities of paediatric physiotherapy practice particularly in relation to ethics, professional behaviour and research

Generic skills

On completion of the subject, students will be expected to be able to demonstrate:

  • Application of theory and research to clinical scenarios.
  • Clear communication skills to promote evidence-based practice.
  • Well-developed problem solving skills.
