This subject provides students with training in research methods to deepen their understanding of evidence-based clinical practice and critical review of the scientific literature. The scholarly literacy of students is enhanced through research, analysis and reference management skills. Scientific communication skills are honed through the production of an outline of a scientific literature review.
Intended learning outcomes
On completion of this subject, students should be able to:
- Describe the principles of research ethics including animal ethics and research integrity
- Identify and search appropriate databases for scientific literature in order to formulate and answer a research question relevant to veterinary medicine
- Structure an outline for a scientific literature review according to standards in common use in veterinary science and related fields, including appropriately referenced key scientific literature using reference management software
Generic skills
Students completing this subject will be able to:
- Research and critically evaluate the scientific literature
- Interpret and integrate knowledge published in scientific reports
- Understand and avoid plagiarism by accurately acknowledging sources used
- Comply with legal and ethical requirements related to accessing, using and storing text, data, images and sound.
