This subject examines the media and urban culture in Asian contexts. It will focus on the role of the media and urban culture in shaping and representing politics, social movements, creative expression and economic development. Students will develop an understanding of how the media and urban lifestyles are interwoven with the dramatic changes that have occurred in Asia from the post-colonial and post World War II period through to Asia’s rise to economic, political and cultural prominence in the 21st century. Topics that will be examined include identity, creativity and urbanisation, with particular emphasis on trends in film, music, fashion and urban lifestyle in East and Southeast Asia.
Intended learning outcomes
On successful completion of this subject, students should be able to:
- Recognise the variety of roles different media and urban cultures play in Asian societies
- Demonstrate familiarity of transnational trends in media and urban culture that cut across Asia
- Develop an understanding of the interplay between culture, politics and society through the media and urban lifestyles
- Demonstrate understanding of academic approaches to the critical analysis of media and urban culture.
