This subject focuses on challenges associated with the management and regulation of business data systems and analytic practices, including privacy, accountability, cybersecurity, and risk management.
Students will also gain a deeper understanding of the ethical challenges and principles associated with data collection, storage and maintenance, application in business intelligence and decision‐making, data governance, and addressing the potential biases associated with algorithmic design and the application of data analytic tools. These issues will be considered as both a business use case and consideration of deeper philosophical and societal challenges associated with the fast‐changing pace of analytic technologies and capabilities faced with the application of generative AI technologies and expanding computational capabilities influencing the application of data science to business decision making.
Intended learning outcomes
On successful completion of this subject, students should be able to:
- Understand the ethical and regulatory debates informing the governance of data collection and use in business decision making business;
- Apply ethical and governance principles to the appropriate design of frameworks governing the collection and use of consumer, employer, market, and other data in business decision making;
- Critically evaluate the challenges and trade‐offs associated with the collection and application of various types of data in business analytics;
- Apply tools and frameworks to make ethical and sustainable decisions related to data practices; and
- Identify trends shaping emerging challenges in appropriate data governance practices in business organisations.
