This capstone subject for the Business Analytics major provides students with an opportunity to demonstrate and apply a framework for a business analytics project. Students can choose to work as part of a group with an industry partner to address a complex problem or challenge the organisation faces, or on an individual analytics project. The project will enable students to work with a range of structured and/or unstructured data sources in which different analytics techniques might be applied to address an organisational or policy challenge.
Over the course of the subject students will be provided with guidance on project planning and design, techniques of identifying and appropriating relevant data, and application of analytic approaches learned over the course of the major.
The emphasis of the subject is on translating the concepts, models and theory derived from business and economics disciplines to frame a business or policy challenge, design an analytics project and apply tools of business analytics in practical situations.
Intended learning outcomes
On successful completion of this subject, students should be able to:
- Integrate theory and concepts from business and economics to frame and execute an analytics project addressing a complex business challenge;
- Apply analytics knowledge and skills obtained throughout the major to formulate actionable solutions to a business problem;
- Prepare a comprehensive business analytics report that demonstrates rigorous application of analytics design principles and approaches from the major to address a business challenge;
- Evaluate and justify a project design and analytical choices to data analysis, including how any ethical considerations were addressed;
- Effectively communicate insights and findings from an applied business analytics project to key decision makers without technical knowledge of analytics techniques; and
- Demonstrate ethical and professional behaviour in relation to application of data analytics to address complex problems.
Generic skills
On successful completion of this subject, students should have improved the following generic skills:
- High level of development: problem solving; statistical reasoning; computer programming; interpretation of the output from algorithms; written communication; data processing and management.
- Moderate level of development: ethical considerations; application of theory to practice.
