Psychological testing is an important part of the psychologist’s tool kit for helping children who are having difficulty learning and adapting to school life. This subject provides extensive hands-on practice with mainstream tests (intelligence, academic, developmental, vocational and personality) which are considered within the context of contemporary theories. Test construction, psychometrics, ethics, links between theory and measurement, culture and linguistic diversity, and reporting are critically examined.
Intended learning outcomes
On completion of this subject students should be able to:
- Demonstrate an understanding of the ethical and professional issues involved in the process of psychological testing and assessment.
- Score and/or administer a variety of psychological tests relevant to Educational and Developmental settings, including a range of intelligence tests, developmental scales, achievement tests, personality tests, vocational tests, and neuropsychological tests.
- Demonstrate competency in administration of a contemporary intelligence test.
- Select and evaluate appropriate assessment instruments for particular presenting issues, integrate diverse sources of psychological data for diagnostic and assessment purposes in the process of clinical decision-making.
- Create client focused psycho-educational psychological reports that are based on contemporary frameworks.
- Evaluate current approaches for assessing individuals from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds and demonstrate cultural sensitivity in the process of clinical and psychological assessment.
