This unit will explore the practice and theoretical underpinnings of data journalism, whereby news content is organized around structured pieces of data, as opposed to conventionally structured news stories. Students will learn how to access key public databases, extract stories from them, and make the data available in visualisations that facilitate citizens’ own inquiries and investigations. Students will be acquainted with the history and current practice of data journalism, including key international examples.
Intended learning outcomes
On successful completion of this subject, students should be able to:
- Access, analyse, and curate data from publicly available sources to produce news and current affairs reports for a range of media delivery platforms.
- Evaluate the historical development and current practices of data journalism to assess its potential impact on news reporting and citizen engagement.
- Collaborate effectively in team-based newsroom environments to produce high-quality data journalism packages that meet professional standards.
- Apply data visualization techniques to present complex data in a clear and engaging manner, facilitating citizens' inquiries and investigations.
- Critically examine the ethical and legal considerations surrounding the use of public data in journalism, ensuring responsible and transparent reporting practices.
