Please note: this subject is delivered wholly online and only open to students enrolled in the wholly online Master of Public Health or Graduate Certificate in Public Health. Subjects in this course are delivered in an online accelerated learning model and therefore, students typically enrol in one 12.5 credit point subject per online teaching term.

This subject aims to help students develop the practical leadership and management skills necessary for the public health workforce. This subject will introduce students to relevant theories and models of public health leadership and project management. This knowledge will be grounded in real-life case studies of public health significance, lectures with experts in the field, interactive sessions to practice skills and small team exploration and presentation on important public health projects, including Indigenous health project.

Intended learning outcomes

On completion of this subject, students should be able to:

  • Discuss and reflect on how effective leadership and management occurs across public health organisations with particular reference to communication, advocacy, emotional intelligence; decision making human rights, equity and ethical approaches;
  • Apply the fundamental project management functions of planning, budgeting, staffing, scheduling, risk management, regulatory oversight and stakeholder management in public health and health care organisations;
  • Accomplish creative and authentic solutions to real-world challenges for public health issues by working in an effective and diverse team;
  • Apply knowledge of Indigenous culture and values to public health leadership in collaborative and complex settings; and
  • Reflect on the theories and practice of leadership in relation to their own personal and professional experience in order to encourage future investment in student's leadership capabilities.

On completion of this subject, students will have developed skills in:
