Overview
Sociology tackles pressing social problems and addresses key social issues such as changes in the life course, gender relations, ethnic, racial and sexual identities, health and illness, the future of work, new technologies, and environmental crises. It engages with social inequalities and explores how people and societies confront these new challenges – from social movements to subcultures to policy reform. Students studying sociology will learn crucial skills in sociological thinking and research to address real world problems facing our society today.
Intended learning outcomes
On completion of this major, students should be able to:
- Discuss social relationships and institutions, patterns of social diversity and inequality, processes that underpin social change and personal narratives through a sociological lens
- Interpret sociology as an academic discipline through analysis of its principal concepts and theories within social, historical and world context
- Apply sociological theories, concepts and evidence to sociological questions within complex and changing social contexts
- Communicate sociological principles and knowledge effectively using appropriate formats oral, written and other
- Evaluate competing explanations and formulate evidence-based arguments grounded in sociological concepts
- Apply research skills, including data collection, analysis, interpretation skills, responding to real-world questions of social significance
- Design approaches to research that account for social inequalities, foster inclusivity, and engage big-picture critical thinking
- Produce sociological outputs that showcase ethical research and demonstrate problem-solving skills at a structural level
