This subject is an Honours level introduction to key concepts and approaches in research methods employed in linguistics, with a particular focus on contemporary scholarship. It will examine current approaches to data collection and analysis in a range of approaches to linguistics. Students will master course concepts by applying them to their own data sets. The course provides students with theoretical knowledge, analytic skills, and professional socialisation that will prepare them to pursue original research in linguistics. This is a hands-on course and students will be expected to collect different types of language data and analyse this across different methodologies.
Intended learning outcomes
On completion of this subject, students should be able to:
- Develop a sound theory-based understanding of methods for collecting and analysing data to be used in addressing research questions in the relevant field(s) of linguistics
- Develop skills for analysing and presenting linguistic data.
Generic skills
On completion of this subject, students should be able to:
- Apply research skills and critical methods to a field of inquiry.
- Communicate oral and written arguments and ideas effectively.
