This subject introduces students to the principles and practices of writing and editing for digital media. It provides students with an understanding of and practical skills in writing for different online contexts and genres, including websites, online essays, multimedia stories, social media content, and search engine optimisation. Students will apply these skills using their existing disciplinary expertise to develop and creative contribute to platforms focused on their professional industries.
Intended learning outcomes
On completion of this subject, students should be able to:
- Explain the conventions of different online genres and formats and analyse digital texts.
- Design and create an online portfolio that aligns with current best practices.
- Author inclusive, accessible and discoverable writing for different platforms and audiences.
- Formulate a social media strategy and create engaging original content.
- Create texts using various multimedia styles and formats that can be published on digital platforms.
- Critically evaluate the technologies and techniques of writing and editing for online readership.
Generic skills
At the completion of this subject, students should gain the following generic skills:
- High-level written and oral communication skills through contribution to class discussions, the completion of exercises and assignments, and wide reading on issues in contemporary digital communication practice
- Cultural and ethical understanding through reflection and reading on the essential criteria of inclusive editing and design strategies for a digital environment
- A high level of information technology literacy through participation in computer laboratory sessions, preparation and management of digital materials and completion of exercises and assignments
- Skills in the deployment of visual materials
- Skills in research, including the use of online materials in the course of preparing exercises and assignments
- Skills in time management and planning through managing workloads for recommended reading, tutorial presentations and assessment requirements.
