In this intensive four-week subject, “Chile: The Land at the End of the World”, we will travel to various locations in and around Santiago de Chile, each site selected for the unique story it tells about the political, social and/or cultural formation of the Chilean identity and experience. Students will gain specialised insight into Chile’s positioning as an actor within Latin American and global discourses and be led to reflect on Australia’s connections with this Southern Cone nation. Through a combination of course work; hands-on engagement with local social organisations; and cultural activities including musical, artisan and culinary events, students will be equipped with conceptual and practical tools for developing intercultural sensitivity and cultural humility in their interactions with other cultures and histories.

This subject is available to students as a breadth subject and is taught in Spanish.

Intended learning outcomes

On completion of this subject, students should be able to:

  • Characterise historical relationships between Chile's indigenous and immigrant communities
  • Identify and discuss landmark political events and their influence on Chilean culture
  • Explain what is unique about Chile's position as well as what it shares with Latin American, Southern Cone and Global South nations
  • Make conceptual connections between Australia's history and social development and Chilean history and society
  • Analyse how Chile's history is expressed in its iconic cultural forms, including music, gastronomy, art, and architecture.

Generic skills

On completion of this subject, students should be able to:

  • Apply critical self-awareness and demonstrate openness to new ideas
  • Employ intercultural communication skills/cultural humility in both interactive and abstract scenarios
  • Developed time management and work planning skills
  • Critically analyse cultural discourses and expression
  • Demonstrate the ability to employ a collaborative approach to learning through reflective participation in activities
  • Demonstrate improved research, written and oral skills in the target language (Spanish)
