Spanish and Latin American Studies // Structure

Students will have their appropriate entry point determined by the Spanish and Latin American Program, based on evidence of prior learning and/or results of a placement test as required. Please refer to the following link for further information:

The entry points for this major are:

• Spanish and Latin American Studies Entry Point 1: for students who have very little or no knowledge of Spanish.
• Spanish and Latin American Studies Entry Point 3: for students who have undertaken two or three years of secondary school Spanish or who have been admitted to the program after proving adequate knowledge of Spanish, adequate placement test results or equivalent.
• Spanish and Latin American Studies Entry Point 5: for students who have obtained VCE Spanish, adequate placement test results, or approved equivalent.

To obtain a major in Spanish and Latin American Studies, students must complete either:

• Entry Point 1

  • 25 credit points of Level 2 major core subjects
  • 12.5 credit points of Level 2 Spanish major elective subject
  • 25 credit points of Level 3 major core subjects
  • 12.5 credit points of capstone subject

  Entry Point 3

  • 25 credit points of Level 2 major core subjects
  • 12.5 credit points of Level 2 Spanish major elective subject
  • 12.5 credit points of Level 3 major core subject
  • 12.5 credit points of capstone subject
  • 12.5 credit points of Level 3 Spanish major elective subject

  Entry Point 5

  • 12.5 credit points of Level 2 major core subject
  • 25 credit points of Level 2 Spanish major elective subject
  • 12.5 credit points of Level 3 capstone subject
  • 25 credit points of Level 3 Spanish major elective subjects

Note: European Studies and other elective subjects should only be undertaken when Spanish electives are unavailable.

A maximum of 12.5 credit points of European Studies / Other electives.

A Major begins at second year. Each discipline has one or more first-year Foundation subjects which provide excellent preparation for the Major. Please note that the Level 2 language subjects in this Major require the completion of two first-year discipline Foundation language subjects as a pre-requisite.
