Overview
ENSEMBLES
This page explains how to perform in the Conservatorium's ensembles.
Ensemble Activities for Bachelor of Music Students
Ensemble activities are available to Bachelor of Music students in the following variations:
i) Enrol in a 6.25-point Music Elective
Bachelor of Music students can enrol in a 6.25-point ensemble subject as a music elective;
OR
ii) Participate in an Ensemble
Bachelor of Music students can participate in an ensemble activity, attend classes, rehearsals, and performances without enrolling in the 6.25-point ensemble subject (non-enrolled participation);
OR
iii) Participate in an Ensemble as part of an Assessment Hurdle
Students taking Practical Music or Performance subjects must participate in an ensemble activity to meet their hurdle requirement. Participation includes attending classes, rehearsals, and performances without enrolling in the 6.25-point ensemble subject (non-enrolled participation).
The following compulsory subjects require non-enrolled participation in an ensemble activity:
- MUSI10220 Practical Music 1
- MUSI10221 Practical Music 2
- MUSI20199 Practical Music 3
- MUSI20200 Practical Music 4
- MUSI30250 Practical Music 5
- MUSI30251 Practical Music 6
- MUSI20201 Performance 3
- MUSI20202 Performance 4
- MUSI30252 Performance 5
- MUSI30253 Performance 6
Non-ensemble subjects are available for Bachelor of Music students whose instrument doesn’t align to the ensemble structure, such as piano students. Please refer to the Music Electives page for all available subjects.
Ensemble Delivery
Ensembles are co-delivered and are offered at multiple year levels. Students cannot simultaneously enrol in co-delivered subjects in the same study period. Ensemble activities may include:
- Non-enrolled students participating in an ensemble activity
- Students enrolled in ensemble 6.25-point subjects as an music elective
- Breadth students enrolled in corresponding ensemble 12.5-point subjects
- Honours and Masters students enrolled in corresponding ensemble subjects
Ensembles with an Audition
The following ensembles have requisites:
- Big Band
- Piano Duo & Duet
- String Ensemble
- Symphonic Ensembles (Symphony Orchestra, Wind Symphony, Philharmonic Orchestra, Concert Band)
- Conservatorium Choir*
- Chamber Choir
- Early Voices
- Vocal Ensemble
Students must submit an application via the online forms to audition: Fine Arts and Music Current Students.
*Students seeking to participate in Conservatorium Choir should refer to the individual subject entry for audition details. Please refer to the Structure section for corresponding subjects.
Following a successful audition, students are granted permission to participate in their chosen ensemble. Students taking an ensemble subject as a music elective then enrol in the appropriate 6.25-point ensemble subject. Students participating in ensemble activities to fulfill a hurdle requirement for Practical Music or Performance subjects should not enrol in the ensemble subject.
Ensembles with a Special Permission Requirement
Certain subjects require students to apply for special permission:
- Chamber Music
