Overview
The University of Melbourne Department of Paediatrics offers an Honours Course in collaboration with its campus partners at the Murdoch Childrens Research Institute and the Royal Children’s Hospital. Many diverse and exciting research programs are available on campus and include laboratory, clinical and public health research. The Honours subject provides students with the opportunity to design and conduct a biomedical research project, under supervision, in any one of these areas. Students will develop their own research project through hypothesis testing, experimental design and practical experimentation, statistical analysis, data interpretation and dissemination of the research findings via podium and written presentations. A molecular background in at least one of Biochemistry, Genetics, Biology or Anatomy & Cell Biology subjects is strongly recommended. The course year starts in February and ends in November and is only available full time.
Intended learning outcomes
Graduates of the Paediatrics Honours program will be able to:
- Demonstrate in-depth knowledge of their research subject to formulate research questions on topics related to human health and disease across the breadth of paediatric disciplines.
- Demonstrate initiative, originality and resourcefulness in conducting biomedical research to address real-world challenges for child and adolescent health.
- Demonstrate competency, achieved through training and experience, in experimental laboratory, clinical or public health research skills appropriate to paediatric disciplines.
- Locate, utilise and synthesise information available in scientific and medical literature and ensure an understanding of experimental and observational data in order to construct a rational scientific argument.
- Design research, including selection and implementation of experimental and observational models and methods, data collection methods, and statistical or qualitative analysis methods.
- Conduct research, including selection and implementation of experimental and observational models and methods, data collection methods, and statistical or qualitative analysis methods.
- Articulate scientific explanations of concepts, theories and research findings, and communicate these ideas effectively to various audiences in both written and oral formats.
- Apply ethical and scientific integrity principles to the conduct of research in child and adolescent health and disease.
- Show proficiency in time management for completion of scientific tasks against set deadlines.
- Work effectively independently, and collaboratively under supervision within a research team from diverse backgrounds.
