Students are required to write a thesis of 15,000 words on a topic approved by the supervisor. Enrolment in the thesis is across two consecutive semesters and students must enrol in the subject in each semester to ensure they are meeting the full 50 point requirement for the year-long subject.
Intended learning outcomes
On successful completion of this subject, student should be able to:
- Design, develop and realise an independent research project from inception through to completion.
- Analyse critically, reflect on and synthesise complex information, problems, concepts and theories relating to art history.
- Formulate a substantive, focused, and well-articulated research question.
- Identify and employ appropriate methodologies suited to answering their research question.
- Understand how ethics applies to research in their field.
- Demonstrate thorough understanding of a specific area of their choice in art history.
Generic skills
On successful completion of this subject, student should be able to:
- Critically analyse scholarly literature and demonstrate independence from the literature.
- Visually analyse artworks.
- Mount a coherent and compelling evidence-based argument.
- Write a lucid and precise academic essay.
- Reference the scholarly literature accurately.
