This unit focuses on problem based learning to build student competencies in working with complex, multifaceted clinical cases. The content will focus on a range of issues across the lifespan including neurological diseases, diverse cultural backgrounds, mental health, behavioural difficulties, pre-intentional and multimodal communication, diverse socio-economic backgrounds, adolescent development and health, aged care and hearing loss. Students will be required to integrate information from a variety of sources, apply knowledge acquired in previous units, address professional issues that arise during complex cases and communicate their ideas clearly and effectively in both written and oral format.
Intended learning outcomes
On completion of this subject, students should be able to:
- Apply evidence based methods for differentially diagnosing, planning and implementing intervention;
- Integrate knowledge acquired from a variety of sources to make decisions about client care;
- Work with peers and independently to apply clinical reasoning to case problem-solving
- Demonstrate problem-solving in complex case management, taking into account multifaceted factors that impact on client care (e.g. cultural, financial, time, treatment resources, other health providers); and
- Communicate clinical information clearly for a variety of purposes and audiences.
Generic skills
On completion of this subject students should show:
- an ability to evaluate and synthesise information in a flexible manner
- a capacity to articulate their knowledge in both oral and written formats
- develop an awareness of the challenges facing their clinical practice
