This research subject provides students with an opportunity to design and execute an original bioinformatics research project, under supervision. The project must be a computer/computing/computational project only and will involve the development or application of bioinformatics tools to address a significant research problem or question. The subject also provides students with skills and knowledge for understanding original research and enhanced written and oral communication skills.
The process of matching students with supervisors and research projects is coordinated by the subject coordinator and occurs midway through the first semester of the Master of Science (Bioinformatics) (MC-SCIBIF). Students are supplied with a list of potential projects/supervisors. However, students may also choose to identify an appropriate supervisor and project of their choosing and request approval from the subject coordinator.
Research project subject organisation:
- Students complete the 50 point research project over 2 semesters (stream C), 3 semesters (stream A, D and E), or 4 semesters (stream B).
- The streams are made up of a sequence of 12.5 or 25 point subjects which must be completed each semester to make up the 50 points at the end of the research project.
- The subjects in each stream must be completed in sequence and in consecutive semesters without a break.
- Specific assessments are due at the end of each semester, depending upon whether it is the first, intermediary or last semester of the research project.
Intended learning outcomes
After completing this subject, students will be able to:
- Critically appraise scientific literature;
- Formulate a bioinformatics research plan;
- Evaluate, and manage computational resources for a bioinformatics project;
- Demonstrate technical proficiency in scientific computing, applying computational tools and methods relevant to bioinformatics;
- Argue the limitations, robustness, and broader implications of their research outcomes within the context of bioinformatics and life sciences.

At the completion of this subject, students will gain skills in:
- Articulating the breadth of knowledge gained in a particular discipline;
- Developing the ability to exercise critical judgement;
- Critically evaluating the data and interpretation of data presented in scientific papers;
