As Australian labour continues to become more diverse, increasing emphasis has been put on diversity-related issues in the workplace. This subject is designed to provide students with information on the multiple levels of diversity, and on how to manage diverse people and related issues to be effective in a global economy.
The subject will impart relevant scientific information as well as applied information (content) to furnish students with a foundation on how to effectively manage employee diversity in the workplace. In this subject, students will also use reflection, cases studies and experimental situations (contact) to reduce stereotypes and prejudices and increase comfort with intergroup contact.
Intended learning outcomes
Upon completion of the subject, students will:
- gain insight into the employment issues, stereotypes and biases faced by various identity groups.
- be able to identify significant differences in the workforce and labour markets, and explore the potential advantages of workforce diversity for an organization.
- be able to explain and critically evaluate the issues related to using different approaches to managing a diverse workforce efficiently and effectively.
- be able to explain what culture is and some of the challenges of managing a diverse workforce across countries.
- be aware of anti-discrimination legislation in all aspects of employment in various countries.
- be able to identify some of the antecedents and outcomes of a climate of inclusion.
