This subject introduces students to dance as a therapeutic modality, and the function of dance as a healing art throughout human history. Students will appraise the development of dance movement therapy into a contemporary evidence-based profession and its application internationally.
Theories that underpin the practice of dance movement therapy will be analysed and critiqued, particularly the function of improvised movement as a therapeutic tool. Experiential learning will be a priority, with students engaged in movement experiences that are enhanced by reflection, group discussion and focused reading.
Intended learning outcomes
On completion of this subject, students should be able to:
- explain practices of dance used for health and wellbeing in cultures throughout history;
- articulate the origins and development of dance movement therapy as a profession;
- critically analyse influential theories underpinning the practice of dance movement therapy, and the function of improvised movement as a therapeutic tool.
Generic skills
On completion of this subject, students should be able to:
- communicate effectively, in oral, written, digital and creative forms;
- develop and implement innovative and creative ideas;
- promote and maintain the wellbeing of self and others;
- show interest in and respect for others;
- respond openly and imaginatively to new ideas.
