This subject will provide students with opportunities for extended participation in a creative arts therapies program supervised and supported by a qualified professional. They will have the opportunity to utilise a number of creative arts therapy methods in practice and receive feedback on their on-going development. They will learn and apply communication and counselling skills as part of their practice, both within sessions and within teams.
Students will also practice the integration of relevant psychological and behavioural theory into a new practice context, as well identifying and utilising particular methods of creative arts therapists. They will learn how to reflect on and articulate how the creative arts therapies can be used in this context, through both informal and formal team communication and in written form through the generation of a report about their own practice.
Placement
Students are required to complete a supervised practical placement (160 accreditation hours) and will work across a range of tasks relevant to the external partner’s objectives in discussion with a qualified professional and the subject coordinator.
Intended learning outcomes
On completion of this subject, students should be able to:
- identify and analyse contemporary, relevant theories to various contexts in professional practice;
- apply foundational communication and counselling skills relevant for professional practice;
- identify and illustrate the unique contribution of a creative arts therapist in a specific team;
- develop and integrate creative arts therapies strategies into a supervised program.

On completion of this subject, students should be able to:
- develop and implement innovative and creative ideas;
- apply critical thinking, analytic and problem-solving skills to unfamiliar challenges;
- show interest in and respect for others;
- integrate personal reflection into the creative process;
- make effective use of planning skills.
