This subject will provide an overview of therapy and research-based knowledge about the ways that creative arts therapists practice in medical contexts.
The design of treatment programs in paediatric and adult hospitals will be explored, with consideration given to the various illnesses and injuries frequently encountered in these contexts. Treatments that focus on physical and mental health outcomes will be delineated, with expert models of practice being highlighted in acute and rehabilitation contexts.
Contemporary practice in other medically informed contexts will also be explored, including nursing homes and inpatient mental health facilities. Relevant psychological theories will be canvassed and critiqued. Distinctions between the practices of drama, dance movement, music and art therapies will be canvassed.
Intended learning outcomes
On completion of this subject, students should be able to:
- distinguish practice models and theoretical orientations appropriate for working as a creative arts therapist in medical contexts;
- assess the needs and potential benefits of creative arts therapies for patients in medical contexts;
- design creative arts therapies interventions that address medical-related needs of patients.

On completion of this subject, students should be able to:
- develop and implement innovative and creative ideas;
- articulate, integrate and adapt knowledge from different domains;
- apply critical thinking, analytic and problem-solving skills to unfamiliar challenges;
- give and receive constructive feedback;
