This subject aims to provide opportunities for students to gain an understanding in, and extend the practice of oral health research. Students are are required to complete a research project and to produce a written thesis under the guidance of their supervisor(s). The research component offers students the opportunity to use state-of-the-art scientific techniques in methods appropriate to their research. This may include qualitative, quantitative, biomedical, experimental, epidemiological or translational research. Biomedical research may include protein chemistry, biochemistry, biophysics, molecular biology, microbiology, immunology, genetics, anatomy, mass spectrometry, NMR spectroscopy, molecular modelling, skeletal biology, histomorphometry, image analysis, vaccines, biofilms, biophysics and proteomics.
Intended learning outcomes
On completion of this subject students will be able to:
- Critically assess and effectively summarise published research in an area of oral health.
- Formulate a research question/hypothesis based on synthesis of published research.
- Design, justify, and conduct appropriate research to answer a research question/hypothesis in oral health.
- Conduct supervised research in a specific area of oral health.
- Demonstrate effective time-management and self-management skills.
- Effectively communicate research findings in written and oral form.

Time commitment details
Students should discuss total time commitment with their supervisor but as a guide, a student would be expected to be engaged in their research for an average of thirty hours per week over two semesters.

Additional delivery details
This subject is delivered in two consecutive parts. Whilst these have separate subject codes, they are considered to be a single continuing subject of 75 credit points. At the end of the first part, students will receive a CNT (Continuing - ongoing) grade. At the completion of the final part students will receive an overall result for the subject.
