Building on skills developed in DENT90031 Research Design 1, this subject will provide students with the opportunity to formulate a research question and develop a research proposal. This subject will provide students with the practical knowledge required to design and plan a research project with consideration given to the process and requirements of ethics approval and selection of appropriate research methods. Students will also enhance their oral and written communication skills as they present components of their proposal across the semester for supervisor and peer feedback.
In the second year of the Graduate Diploma in Clinical Dentistry (Implants), the students will implement the project they designed in this subject.
Intended learning outcomes
On completion of the subject, students should be able to:
Knowledge
- Describe the theoretical concepts behind a range of qualitative and quantitative data analysis techniques
Skills
- Formulate a research question answerable with existing research evidence in an area of clinical interest
- Systematically search the available literature and demonstrate advanced appraisal of published research literature and evidence
- Synthesise, interpret and integrate research findings from multiple sources
Application of Knowledge and Skills
- Plan a research project, including the steps to obtain ethical approval
- Communicate a research proposal effectively in oral and written formats
Generic skills
- Communicate advanced concepts in written and oral form;
- Exercise responsibility for their own learning;
- Manage their time effectively.
