The capstone component requires a student to conduct a significant leadership for development research‐based activity that draws on knowledge, attitudes and competencies acquired during the taught component of the program. Two options will be available:
Option 1: A Group Project ‐ Students will, as part of a small group, identify a wicked problem in development and conceptualise, design and develop an appropriate leadership response to solve that problem. Assessment will include a peer‐review component.
Option 2: An Individual Dissertation ‐ Students will identify, conceptualise, design, and conduct a small research project and report it as a dissertation. Dissertation research is an individual project aimed at delivering an impactful contribution on a topic related to leadership for development.
Intended learning outcomes
On completion of the subject, students should be able to:
- Apply enhanced research skills, knowledge and approaches to a real world case
- Refine, articulate and justify their ideas to an audience
- Develop and demonstrate effective research project skills including critical analysis and report writing
- Demonstrate the ability to plan and execute a research‐based project, or produce a piece of research scholarship within their area of specialisation, including framing a problem, posing an argument, analysing salient factors, and raising relevant implications and leadership actions.

Eligibility and requirements
Prerequisites
Student need to have completed at least 62.5 points of study in the Master of Leadership for Development prior to enrolling in this subject. Completion of DEVT90075 International Management and Leadership is required.

Inherent requirements (core participation requirements)
The course is designed for online delivery, students are required to participate online. Students will be required to meet some basic technological requirements such as ongoing and stable access to the internet, up to date browsers, and a microphone and headset for webinars (as specified at: https://online.unimelb.edu.au/support/current-students/apps-and-software-info/systems-and-support)

Assessment

Option 1: Group Project
As part of a small group, students will identify a wicked development problem and continue to conceptualise, design and develop an appropriate leadership response to solve that problem.
Assessment will consist of:
- Peer review component (1500 words/10%)
- Individual contributions and reflections (4500 words/30%)
- Project Proposal Group Submission (1500 words/10%)
- Final Project Report Group Submission(7500 words/50%)
Students must pass all pieces of assessment to pass the subject
Option 2: Individual Dissertation
Students will identify, conceptualise, design, and conduct a small research project and report it in a dissertation of 15000 words. Dissertation research is an individual project aimed at delivering an impactful contribution on a topic related to leadership for development.
Assessment will consist of:
- Research Project Scope/Design Proposal (3000 words/20%)
- Dissertation (12000 words/80%)
Students must achieve an overall final grade of 60% equivalent or more to pass the subject
