This subject develops students’ understanding of the inter-related linguistic knowledge-bases, cognitive processes, and social and cultural practices involved in reading practices. Various interpretations of reading will be discussed, including learning to read, reading for engagement and motivation, and reading for critical purposes. Students will critically engage with research related to pedagogical practices that support reading across the lifespan, including reading texts in diverse forms and texts produced by creators from diverse communities, such as First Nations.
Intended learning outcomes
On completion of this subject, students should be able to:
- Develop understanding of the complex and contested approaches to reading education
- Develop understanding of the impact of digital technologies on reading practices
- Examine research about reading pedagogies and theories of reading
- Analyse reading data related to the diverse forms of reading in which individuals engage
- Evaluate the political and ideological factors that inform decisions about reading pedagogies

- Communicate competently in ways relevant to professional contexts
