This subject provides students with an opportunity for a practical engagement with education issues through exploring case studies of education policy and governance. Using an inquiry-based approach, students will critically analyse examples of policy development, enactment, and review. The subject will involve direct engagement with professionals working in education policy and governance, through presentations and, where possible, site visits. Students will draw on the research literature to examine key issues and debates relevant to the case studies under consideration.
Intended learning outcomes
On completion of this subject, students should be able to:
- Demonstrate an understanding of current educational policy and governance debates (global and local), through critical examination of selected case studies
- Demonstrate an understanding of strengths-based approaches to education policy, through case studies that consider the implications for diversity, inclusion, and social justice, the experience of First Nations people and their contribution to education
- Demonstrate an understanding of the role of education in addressing environmental and social sustainability through analysis of new and emerging policies
- Demonstrate an understanding of the application of educational research principles and methods to support the critical examination of case studies on education policy and governance.
