This subject examines the changing contours of English from a plurilingual perspective. Students will develop an understanding of the historical, social and political factors that have shaped the changing nature of English languages in a global and digital world. Students will apply a range of theoretical frameworks to examine diverse Englishes, recognising English as a pluricentric language that can enhance pedagogical and assessment practices. Other topics explored in this subject include: standard language ideology, linguistic features of varieties of English (such as Aboriginal English), and plurilingual practices in a digital context.
Intended learning outcomes
On completion of this subject, students should be able to:
- Analyse the factors that have shaped the contemporary landscape of Englishes from a plurilingual perspective
- Identify challenges and opportunities in educational contexts where plurilicentric Englishes are present to design strategies that promote inclusive practices
- Examine the cultural and linguistic characteristics and intricacies of various Englishes, and propose appropriate plurilingual pedagogies to support diverse English speakers
- Synthesise relevant materials to position their pedagogical approaches, demonstrating an awareness of English as a plurilicentric language
- Evaluate data to propose and develop inclusive pedagogical practices to each English(es) in a global context.
