This is the capstone subject for the Performance Design major in the Bachelor of Design, and will integrate previous coursework in the major. The core of the undergraduate sequence in the major is the development of both design thinking and dexterity with tools.
The focus of the investigations of this capstone subject will be performance design, using a text (a play text, a piece of music, a piece of choreography, a soundscape) and a set of circumstances (the brief), which will be explored by students through the lens of two or more of the previous design studios. The project will involve an engagement with historical, theoretical, structural, and environmental ideas relevant to the text.
Intended learning outcomes
On completion of this subject, students should be able to:
- demonstrate an ability to generate, explore and critically evaluate a variety of design possibilities for a given text;
- demonstrate an understanding of relationships between design proposals and a design brief;
- select from a range of theories (performative, artistic, environmental, historical, philosophical, scientific, etc.) and make them relevant to the task at hand;
- understand and link the relationship between design theory and the project brief;
- demonstrate skills in the appropriate use of representational media;
- demonstrate the ability to make a case for practical design proposals;
- demonstrate an ability to integrate studies from the chosen previous studios that form the basis of the proposal;
- engage with and contribute to their own work and the work of others in the studio.
