This subject focuses on genre writing for screen media. Examining Science Fiction, Romance, Thriller, Fantasy, and Horror storytelling conventions, students develop a basic working knowledge of these popular forms as explored by screenwriters.
Students participate in Story Teams to complete in-class exercises in genre storytelling and write a 10-page screenplay anchored in the conventions of a genre chosen from those examined in the subject.

This subject is co-delivered with FLTV20017 Screenwriting Practices 2B.
Intended learning outcomes
On completion of this subject, students should be able to:
- create, develop and write short scripts whose conventions are anchored in a particular genre;
- identify and effectively apply screenwriting tropes employed in genre filmmaking;
- critically discuss the historical and contemporary use of genre conventions in writing for the screen;
- collaborate productively as a member of a creative team;
- analyse a screenplay to give and receive creative and critical feedback in a professional manner.

On completion of this subject, students should be able to:
- apply critical thinking, analytical and problem-solving skills to unfamiliar challenges;
- integrate personal reflection into the creative process;
- give and receive constructive feedback;
- develop and implement innovative and creative ideas;
- employ a wide range of idea creation techniques.
