This subject provides an introduction to the theory, experimental design and practice of techniques used in molecular biology and genetic analysis. Students work collaboratively to perform a series of laboratory-based practicals to explore fundamental principles in genetics and molecular genetic analysis of microorganisms and higher organisms. A key component of this subject is the development of analytical skills associated with the interpretation of genetic data and the communication of results.
Intended learning outcomes
By the end of the subject, a student should be able to:
- describe the theoretical basis of techniques used in molecular biology and genetic analysis;
- perform experiments to investigate gene function, test gene interactions and characterise gene expression;
- analyse and interpret experimental data and apply appropriate statistical analyses to complex datasets
- collate and present data in a scientific format; and
- evaluate and solve molecular and genetics-based problems

On completion of this subject students should have developed the following generic skills:
- Problem-solving skills: ability to work in small groups or individually to solve problems
- Analytical skills: capacity to follow detailed experimental protocols to generate, collect and analyze experimental data
- Communication skills: ability to ccommunicate experimental outcomes in a clear, concise and accurate manner
- Collaborative skills: capacity to work in small groups to perform experiments, solve problems and communicate research findings
- Time management skills: ability to plan effective work schedules to accomplish laboratory tasks and to meet deadlines.
