This subject introduces students to a range of software tools and techniques for internet communication. Students participate in lab-based workshops in researching, producing and evaluating various forms of digital communication, with the aim of realizing a specific online publishing project during the semester. The practical workshops are contextualized within contemporary media and communications studies research to provide a critical understanding of the social, economic and political issues associated with internet communication and digital culture. Topics covered include online collaboration, visual communication, peer economies, and digital labor.
Intended learning outcomes
Students who successfully complete this subject should be able to:
- Analyse the social context of digital content creation and internet communication.
- Produce and evaluate internet communication using practical knowledge of a range of digital tools and methodologies for research.
- Design and present a digital design project using advanced conceptual and practical knowledge.
- Apply enhanced digital and information literacy skills relevant to working in fields of communication and media industries.
Generic skills
Students who successfully complete this subject should be able to:
- Identify appropriate analytical frameworks to effectively communicate their ideas in both written and oral forms and on the world wide web
- Contribute to group discussion, and to engage with the views expressed by other students
- Organise their personal study to reflect on their own learning processes and to complete assessment tasks in a timely manner
