In this subject, students will critically evaluate the role of clinical ultrasound in its application to the preoperative patient. They will interpret cardiovascular and other investigations used to risk stratify patients prior to surgery, and assess how these impact on perioperative planning. They will evaluate how best to optimise the patient condition prior to surgery, including appraisal of preoperative management of cardiovascular, respiratory, endocrine, renal and hepatic, neurological and psychiatric conditions and the role of clinical ultrasound in these settings.

Intended learning outcomes

On completion of this subject, students should be able to:

  • Appraise the concept of prehabilitation, patient optimisation and risk stratification and the role of perioperative clinical ultrasound in these settings
  • Understand how to perform and be able to interpret cardiopulmonary exercise tests
  • Integrate knowledge of clinical ultrasound as part of the pre-surgery assessment
  • Integrate risk assessment and preoperative optimisation for multiple organ system pathology, with evaluation of the role of perioperative ultrasound
  • Integrate specific preoperative considerations for cancer surgery into preoperative planning
  • Integrate specific preoperative considerations of high risk obstetric and paediatric patients into preoperative planning

Formative assessment of multiple choice questions following each tutorial; One hour total assessment: equivalent to 1000 words assessment.

Formative assessment - Interpretation of case studies assessed by structured questions pertaining to each case. Two hour total assessment time; Equivalent to a total of 2000 words assessment.

Formative group activity. Groups of 4 students will discuss cases that they have been involved with and create a structured group report on the problem, evaluation and solutions. Four cases per group, with all students receiving the same mark for the group report

Hurdle requirement: Good faith attempt in responses to templated clinical reflections		Available online at end weeks 2,4,6 and 8 and all cases must be submitted by end week 12.20%

Self-reflective e-portfolio of cases that the student has managed or been involved in patient care in perioperative medicine – 6 cases. 0.5hr total assessment time: equivalent to 500 words.

Time commitment details

170 hours ‐ it is estimated that distance education students will be required to spend approximately 170 hours total time commitment (a total of approximately 14 hrs/week, of which 2.5 hrs are contact hours as described above). The additional time commitment to the contact hours described above is anticipated to be spent reading nominated texts, journal review, practice worksheets and in identifying and integrating the information within their clinical practice.
