After completion of this subject, students will have the knowledge of when and how to perform ultrasound-guided percutaneous procedures commonly used in critical care, including central and peripheral venous and arterial vascular access, drainage of effusions from the lung, heart and peritoneal cavities, and ultrasound guided surgical airway procedures.
Intended learning outcomes
On completion of this subject, students should be able to:
- Describe in detail the anatomy relevant to ultrasound-guided drainage of effusions from the pericardial, pleural and abdominal cavities and cannulation of vessels and the trachea.
- Identify the key steps required to minimise infectious and mechanical complications from percutaneous procedures.
- Identify the key steps required to perform and write a structured report of ultrasound-guided procedures including central and peripheral vascular access, drainage of effusions of the lung, heart and peritoneal cavities, and ultrasound-guided surgical airway procedures.
- Evaluate the requirements for training, competence, and certification in ultrasound-guided procedures.
