As organisations have gradually shifted towards using more team-based work structures, one of the main challenges in the modern workplace is how to effectively lead and manage teams. This subject deals with this challenge by focusing on understanding the principles of leadership in organisations and the fundamentals of team structure of team processes. Topics considered include: the structure of teams within organisations; differences in team members; managing interpersonal dynamics in teams; theories of leadership; the role of managers as organisational leaders; human resource and organisational factors that impact leading teams effectively.
Intended learning outcomes
On successful completion of this subject, students should be able to:
- Examine and evaluate the integrated nature of team composition, structures, and leadership principles across the individual, interpersonal, group/team and organisational levels
- Explore the interaction of human processes across these levels
- Analyse the perspectives from different stakeholders and the tradeoffs that occur from different decisions
- Develop a critical appreciation of the nature of organisational leadership and the role of leaders
Generic skills
On successful completion of this subject, students should have improved the following generic skills:
- The ability to examine their own ideas and beliefs about team dynamics and leadership and compare them with the theories and observations of others
- An appreciation of the integrated nature of leading and managing people in team-based work structures
- An understanding of a range of ideas concerning effective team leadership in the organisational context

Admission into or selection of one of the following:
