This subject continues to develop the skills individual performers require for a range of repertoire appropriate to the specialist area, leading to individual presentations in formal recital environments. The subject includes individual lessons with expert practitioners, as well as group classes, which focus on the art of improvisation and developing the ability to compose and perform in real time.
Intended learning outcomes
On completion of this subject, students should be able to:
- employ intermediate techniques of functional harmony as related to jazz-based chord construction in jazz-based and original repertoire;
- apply intermediate techniques of contemporary rhythmic practice to jazz-based and original repertoire;
- prepare and perform a recital program of jazz-based and original repertoire with skill and confidence;
- appraise their practice regime in terms of efficacy in achieving development goals;
- apply an intermediate understanding of non genre-based compositional tools to improvisation;
- explore the connection between 'real-time' composition and concepts of 'flow' and 'play';
- critically self-reflect and apply creative problem-solving to their development as improvising musicians.
Generic skills
On completion of this subject students should be able to:
- developed in-depth knowledge of their specialist discipline;
- reached a high level of achievement in creative artistic practice, problem solving and communication;
- be critical and creative thinkers, with an aptitude for continued self-directed learning;
- have the capacity to participate fully in collaborative learning and to confront unfamiliar problems.
