This subject guides students in further developing their compositional technique, including ensemble writing and working with electronic media. Students explore compositional philosophy and technique through directed listening and score reading, and through creating a folio of original music (scores and recordings). Assessment also includes a concert presentation of their music in collaboration with their peers.

Intended learning outcomes

On completion of this subject, students should be able to:

  • apply individual musical ideas and working methods to composition;
  • communicate with performers through professionally presented music notation;
  • develop new ideas in the creation of musical works through practice and experiment;
  • write idiomatically and creatively for small-to-medium ensembles;
  • use electronic music hardware and software fluently;
  • work collaboratively with performers and peers on the presentation of their music;
  • critique and respond creatively to recent developments in musical composition, both aesthetic and technical;
  • contextualise their own compositional ideas through awareness of contemporary music repertoire.

Generic skills

On completion of this subject students should have further developed:

  • the ability to think laterally in relation to concepts and problem-solving;
  • the ability to communicate in an abstract medium;
  • the ability to take initial creative ideas through to completion, including publication, public presentation and promotion.
