This subject sets the foundation of technical skills in the three major disciplines underpinning a career in music theatre; acting, singing and dancing. It will include introductory classes in acting, text, movement, spoken voice, dance techniques, body conditioning, solo singing and ensemble singing.
The students will focus on the conditioning and strengthening of the professional body and voice to enable a released, individual impulse in response to stimuli.
Through skills-based performances and reflection, students will develop the foundational knowledge of acting, singing, and dancing.
Intended learning outcomes
On completion of this subject, students should be able to:
- identify and apply safe and appropriate exercises for the performer to achieve an optimum state to excel in acting, singing, or dancing;
- embody physiological foundations of different components of the body and voice;
- demonstrate fundamental phrasing, blending, and harmonising skills in ensemble singing contexts;
- demonstrate efficiency in fundamental acting, singing and dancing skills;
- exhibit a developing sense of play and imaginative exploration;
- reflect on acting, singing and dancing skills at an introductory level.
Generic skills
On completion of this subject students should be able to:
- promote and maintain the wellbeing of self and others;
- integrate personal reflection into the creative process;
- communicate constructively in different social situations;
- work as part of a team to achieve a common goal.
