This subject expands awareness of the history and major developments in music theatre of the second half of the 20th century within social, cultural and historical contexts and as they connect to diverse objectives and influences.
Through research and debate, students will have the opportunity to further advance analytical skills in elements of structure and performance of music theatre works. Students will extend skills in musicianship, aural studies and music theory. This will provide them with an analytical music theory framework and vital skills for their practice-based voice and music studies.
Through research, debate and the demonstration of skills, students will develop deeper understanding of the development of music theatre through to the contemporary era.
Intended learning outcomes
On completion of this subject, students should be able to:
- appraise and contextualise historical developments in music theatre from the 1960's through to the present era;
- critically analyse a variety of performance philosophies and their relative merits and shortcomings from multiple perspectives;
- critically examine music theatre performance styles from the 1960's through to the present era;
- demonstrate music literacy, aural acuity and musicianship skills.
