This subject provides the theoretical foundation for competent practice in paediatric critical care. Students will extend their knowledge from Applied Physiology to develop an understanding of acute and complex illnesses and diseases commonly seen in the critically ill paediatric patient. The biological basis for and evidence-based principles underpinning treatment and symptom management of common diseases and illnesses will be explored. The application of technology used in paediatric critical care will be examined. Students will gain essential knowledge to assess, plan, manage and evaluate interventions. Students will gain a deeper understanding of and integration of patient and family perspectives of illness and disease to their clinical practice.
Intended learning outcomes
At the completion of this subject, students should be able to:
- Apply principles regarding paediatric anatomy, physiology and pathophysiology, mechanism of injury and pharmacotherapeutics to explain assessment findings for common paediatric critical care patient presentations
- Apply scientific principles to further explore knowledge and evidence-based skills applicable to the specialty of paediatric critical care
- Critically analyse assessment and diagnostic findings to recognise and prioritise age appropriate, specific, and family centred therapeutic interventions for patients experiencing disease states common to paediatric critical care patients
- Apply specialist paediatric knowledge and evidence to clinical decision making when developing a plan of care and determining nursing interventions in critically ill children and their families
- Apply scientific principles to evaluate paediatric critical care nursing interventions and explore the evolving knowledge applicable to the specialty of paediatric critical care nursing
Generic skills
On completion of the subject students should have developed the following generic skills of the Melbourne graduate and postgraduate coursework student:
- A capacity to articulate their knowledge and understanding in written modes of communication;
