This subject extends the theoretical knowledge of paediatric intensive care nursing students have gained by exploring acute and complex illness and injury in the critically ill and/or injured paediatric patient, particularly those requiring high technology care management. Students will apply knowledge and skills in problem solving, critical thinking and reflective practice to explore the evidence underpinning paediatric intensive care nursing to solve patient management problems encountered in specific intensive care environments. Students will extend their knowledge to assess, plan, manage and evaluate interventions, while developing a deeper understanding and appreciation of patient and family perspectives of illness and disease.

Intended learning outcomes

At the completion of this subject, it is expected that students will be able to do the following:



  • Integrate knowledge regarding paediatric anatomy, physiology and pathophysiology, mechanism of injury and pharmacotherapeutics to explain assessment findings in paediatric intensive care patient presentations
  • Apply scientific principles to further explore knowledge and evidence-based skills applicable to the specialty of paediatric intensive care
  • Critically analyse patient assessment and diagnostic findings to recognise and prioritise age appropriate, specific, and family centred therapeutic interventions for patients experiencing complex paediatric disease or injury states
  • Apply advanced specialist paediatric knowledge and evidence to clinical decision making when developing a plan of care and determining nursing interventions in critically ill and/or injured children and their families
  • Apply scientific principles to evaluate paediatric intensive care nursing interventions and further explore the evolving knowledge applicable to complex paediatric intensive care nursing

  • the ability to communicate knowledge through web based activities.
