This subject will provide students with the theoretical scientific knowledge for medical-oncology nursing, including an understanding of the biology, presentation, diagnosis and treatment of high frequency, high-risk solid tumours in specialist cancer nursing care to prepare, support and assess people affected by cancers. Students will also evaluate best practice specialist nursing in the management of people affected by high frequency, high-risk solid malignancies as well as identify peoples supportive care needs.
Intended learning outcomes
On completion of this subject, students will be able to:
- Integrate core principles covered in the subject and its pre-requisite, Foundations of Cancer Nursing, to develop practice knowledge to provide specialist cancer nursing care that addresses actual and potential disease- and treatment-related health needs
- Explain the principles of cancer biology, presentation, diagnosis and treatment of high frequency, high risk solid tumours in specialist cancer nursing care to prepare, support and assess people affected by these cancers
- Integrate best practice specialist nursing care in the management of people affected by high frequency, high risk solid tumours
- Assess the supportive care needs of people affected by high frequency, high risk solid tumours and evidence-based multidisciplinary interventions to meet these needs
