This course explores the interface of policy and practice in the delivery of aged care services. The responses to policy shifts in aged care over time will be explored. The course will then focus on the present day impact of health care, mental health, income security, housing, and employment, educational and recreational policies on the delivery of services to older citizens collectively and as individuals. Case studies will be used to illustrate both the theoretical and practical aspects of designing and delivering services.
Intended learning outcomes
On completion of this subject, students will be able to:
- understand and be able to articulate the interface between policy and practice in the delivery of aged care services;
- demonstrate an informed understanding of the impact of policies on the provision of programs for older citizens;
- critically discuss, assess and develop strategies to improve the implementation of policy on the delivery of services to older citizens; and
- present a case study from their field/area that demonstrates an applied understanding of the interaction between policy and practice in an aged care setting.

Students will be provided with the opportunity to practice and reinforce:
- high level written communication skills
- advance information and interpretation skills
- advance analytic, integration and problem-solving skills
- demonstrate competence in critical and theoretical thinking through essay writing and online discussions
