A research topic selected in consultation with the allocated supervisor. Enrolment in the thesis is across two consecutive semesters and students must enrol in the subject in each semester to ensure they are meeting the full 50 point requirement for the year-long subject.
Intended learning outcomes
On successful completion of this subject, students should:
- Develop and complete a significant research project which is written up and presented as a 15,000 word dissertation
- Develop skills in scholarly investigation and critical analysis appropriate to screen and cultural studies
- Enhance research capacity and to improve writing skills under supervision.
Generic skills
At the completion of this subject, students should gain the following generic skills:
- Be able to conceptualise and plan a substantial project of original research
- Present material in draft form and engage productively with a supervisor
- Synthesise critical arguments and debates
- Enhance writing skills in both a critical and creative manner
- Manage time and study resources over two consecutive semesters
- Possess advanced skills of critical thinking and analysis
- Possess an ability to communicate knowledge intelligibly, economically and effectively

Prerequisites
Students enrolled in the thesis must also complete SCRN40019 Screen & Cultural Research Seminar (may be undertaken concurrently).

Students that commenced the Bachelor of Arts (Honours) in Screen and Cultural Studies or Graduate Diploma (Advanced) in Screen Studies or Cultural Studies prior to 2022 and have already completed ARTS40001 Research Principles and Practices are not required to undertake SCRN40019.
Please note:
This subject is only available to Screen and Cultural Studies Specialisation students enrolled in a BH-Arts, Bachelor of Arts (Degree with Honours) or a GDA-Arts, Graduate Diploma (Advanced) in Arts.

Hurdle requirement: 2. Late Penalty and Assessment hurdle requirement: Assessment submitted late without an approved extension will be penalised at five per cent (5%) of the possible marks available for the assessment task per day or part thereof. All pieces of assessment must be submitted to pass the subject. This subject is taught over two consecutive semesters. Total time commitment for the subject is approximately 680 hours, inclusive of two semesters (thesis Part 1 and Part 2).

This is part of a 50 point thesis subject, continuing over two consecutive study periods.
Students are required to enrol in:
- SCRN40017 Screen & Cultural Studies Thesis Part 1 (25 points) and
- SCRN40018 Screen & Cultural Studies Thesis Part 2 (25 points), consecutively.
Students will receive a ‘CNT’ grade in the part 1 and results will be entered if and when both part 1 and 2 are completed.
