Subject Overview:

This subject involves a review of Jewish literature from the Enlightenment to the present, featuring a variety of authors, genres and texts. One of the themes of the subject is the exploration of the role of metaphor, biblical and modern, within Jewish literature, with particular attention to the sacrifice of Isaac and other biblical metaphors. Students will also explore issues of Jewish literary bilingualism, and the representation of women and of non-Jewish figures in Jewish literature. Students should complete the semester with an understanding of the development of modern Hebrew and Jewish literature.

Objectives:
  • have an understanding of the role of metaphor in various genres of literature;
  • be familiar with the modes and methodologies of literary analysis;
  • have an understanding of the development of modern Hebrew literature.
Assessment:

One essay of 2000 words due mid-semester 50%, one essay of 2000% words due end of semester 50%.

Hurdle requirement: students must attend a minimum of 75% of tutorials in order to pass this subject. Assessment submitted late without an approved extension will be penalised at 10% per day; after five working days, no late assessment will be marked. In-class tasks missed without approval will not be marked. All pieces of written work must be submitted to pass this subject.
