To enrol in this subject, you must be admitted in the Graduate Diploma in Clinical Education (GD-CLINED) or the Master of Clinical Education (MC-CLINED). This subject is not available for students admitted in any other courses.

Subject Overview:

Clinical simulation involves a range of immersive techniques that replace or amplify real clinical experiences with interactive, guided ones to achieve enhanced educational outcomes with safety for both patient and learner. This subject examines the educational underpinnings of effective clinical simulation. It includes an optional evening site visit to a clinical simulation facility.

Learning Outcomes:

By completing this subject, participants should be able to:

  • understand the underlying principles of effective clinical simulation
  • describe the range of clinical simulation techniques and the appropriateness of low/high technology and low/high fidelity simulations for different clinical situations
  • design a clinical simulation scenario using a range of resources
  • conduct an effective debriefing and feedback discussion with learners following a simulated experience
  • understand the role of clinical simulation in promoting effective interprofessional teamwork
Assessment:
  • Written assignment arguing the pros and cons of the use of simulation based education in the current delivery of clinical education in your organisation, using the papers provided to assist in the development of your position (1500 words) due mid semester - 60%
  • Design a simulation based education case that could be conducted in your organisation, using the template provided and based on the areas covered in the face to face teaching day (1000 words) due end of semester - 40%
