This subject provides a broad overview of biological interventions for mental ill-health in youth. It explores principles of prescribing in youth mental health and the biological basics of pharmacology, common psychopharmacological interventions for affective and psychotic disorders and their side effects, and managing adherence in young people.
Subject content includes:
- Principles of prescribing in youth mental health and the biological basics of pharmacology
- Psychopharmacotherapy for depression and anxiety
- Psychopharmacotherapy for psychotic disorders
- Psychopharmacotherapy for ADHD/Conduct Disorders
- Psychopharmacotherapy for bipolar disorder
- Managing adherence: Compliance therapy and other interventions
- Non-pharmacological evidence-informed treatments
Intended learning outcomes
By the end of this subject students should be able to:
- Describe the issues and principles of pharmacotherapy for young people
- Identify best practice pharmacotherapy for a range of presentations
- Develop a plan for managing non-adherence in young people
- List key concepts of pharmacology and its physiological effects
- Identify other evidence-based non-pharmacological biological interventions
